Can You Reheat Quinoa?

Q: My family loves quinoa, but I hate how long it takes to make. Is there a way to reheat it quickly, so I can make a big batch and use it throughout the week?

A: Quinoa is one of the easiest meal/side dish to reheat! There are two really great ways to reheat it. When you are looking to warm it quickly, use the microwave. Otherwise, the stove works just as well. Both yield terrific results!

The Microwave Method

When you are microwaving any food, you should break it up as much as possible. Reheating a solid block of something will take longer than if it were spread throughout the bowl. In the case of quinoa, you should put as much as you need in a bowl, and break it down. From there, make a small well in the center, this will help it reheat more evenly. After you have, it spread correctly, add just a splash of water, about four tablespoons, or enough to moisten the grains.

After you have done the minimal prep work, pop it in the microwave for about 30 seconds, stir, and microwave for an additional 30 seconds.

The Stove Method

This method is rather straightforward and is the more traditional way to go. Simply add the quinoa to the pan/skillet, add one tablespoon of olive oil, and a splash of water. Remember quinoa will absorb the water, and you want it to move freely in the end. If you do not add enough water, you will notice it is very thick and almost pasty. Should this happen to you,  add more water, and it will fix the problem.

Once you have everything in the pan of choice, heat it over medium heat until warmed through, about eight- ten minutes. Be sure to stir it often!

Quinoa is one of the best additions to any meal, or to make as a main course itself. With these new ways to heat this delicious, healthy alternative to “fast” food, how are you spicing up your meals? How well did these methods work for you? Do you do anything differently? Be sure to let us know.
