Q: As much as I love instant mashed potatoes, I can never make the right amount for my family. Every time I make them, have enough to feed an army. Typically, I have to make them into another dish, but lately I have been wondering, I can I reheat them on their own?
A: The method you choose to reheat your mashed potatoes will vary on how much you have left over. There are two suitable methods; both give wonderful fluffy results.
The Microwave Method
Depending on how much you have left over, you should be able to microwave it. If you have a five person (or less) serving, you can easily microwave it. To do so, simply scoop the mashed potatoes into a microwave safe dish and stir to break it up. Add two tablespoons of milk or water for every two cups of potatoes. Microwave, covered, on high for two minutes and 30 seconds, stir, and continue heating until warm. This cross can take about five minutes, depending on the amount and density of the potatoes.
The Oven Method
When you have many mouths to feed, using the oven to reheat leftover mashed potatoes is great! Simply preheat your oven to 350 degrees F, grease a baking dish, and smooth your mashed potatoes evenly throughout. Tightly wrap with aluminum foil, and bake for 30-45 minutes until all the way warmed through. It may help make the process faster if you stir it halfway through cooking.
No matter what the season is, mashed potatoes are great with just about any meal. So instead of throwing these away, find a way to make your leftovers into another meal, or as a delicious side dish for another main course. Don’t forget to doctor them up to change the flavor or serve it with gravy!
